Deployment of the first CASPER packetised correlator in the Galford Meadow at NRAO, Green Bank, West Virginia for the PAPER experiment.
Having arrived in Charlottesville, we loaded the vehicles with equipment and headed for Green Bank.
The roads to the site can be quite treacherous when they ice-up. A truck had overturned on the road and we were forced to make a 20 minute detour.
The reroute was a little muddy.
The adjacent valley is beautiful and the winding drive through the pass provides a great viewpoint.
The area is sparsely populated with many ranches. "Going to town" often means little more than a general supply store.
On the approach - those are the 300ft and 140ft dishes in the background.
A little piece of history.
A view of the 300ft from the control room.
Our allocated wheels for the week - a 1980 Diesel Rabbit, 4 speed manual. This proved to be great fun in the snow.
Some of us came prepared. "Nice boots, Aaron."
One of the PAPER antennas. They are non-steerable, with a full view of the sky at all times. Each antenna will eventually be dual polarisation, with a frequency range of 100MHz - 200MHz.
On the way back, it started snowing in earnest and we spotted our first wildlife.
The correlator is unpacked and assembled on a bench to make sure that everything is working as it should.
Strategic planning with Nicole, Aaron, Don and Jason. We readied a new laptop for use as our control, monitoring and data-aquisition machine in one afternoon using all open-source applications.
We awoke the next morning to a white land.
We opted for a four wheel drive to go into the now-frozen bog!

This picture shows an aerial view of the antenna field. Can you spot the two antennas visible in the picture?
The hut where all the signal processing takes place and the equipment is stored.
An antenna in the snow.
Door to nowhere?
Nope, it's just the hut on a particularly cold, wintery night.
The night we first powered the system was rather misty. Aaron and Jason were the only two people in earshot with no lights but that found in the hut. It was all rather eerie.

The big moment has arrived: First fringes on 16 Jan at 23h29!
